With the launch of Blaze Pictures, Joyce Im Bartholomew intends to create a vehicle for second-generation Asians like herself, who are more predisposed to Western than Asian ways and values. Born HaeKyoung Im in Seoul, Bartholomew’s parents moved to Los Angeles when Joyce was a baby. She grew up in LA, performed to acclaim in community theatre, attended American universities, and married Doug Bartholomew, an American-born investment consultant. The pair has lived in Toronto since 1996, where Bartholomew has performed and worked in theatre and television. Although she holds degrees in dentistry (Northwestern) and kinesiology (UCLA), Bartholomew’s passion is acting. Her goal is to share her own, and the experiences of other second-generation Asians, and extend to mainstream audiences the range of reality and complexity she feels is common to her fellow twenty- and thirty-somethings.
